Dolly Parton was so much more than an incredible singer and songwriter. She was a dreamer, a storyteller, a businesswoman, a philanthropist, a champion for children, and someone who continually used her success to support other people. Her life is full of lessons about working hard, staying true to yourself, showing kindness, valuing where you came from, and giving back.
That makes Dolly such an inspiring person for our kids to learn about, so of course we had to create these Dolly Parton reading comprehension worksheets!
I was also incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to visit Dollywood just recently (watch our tiktok video on the link), before Dolly passed away. That trip feels even more special to me now. Being there in the Great Smoky Mountains and seeing how much of Dolly’s personality, history, love of music, and Appalachian heritage is woven throughout the park gave me an even greater appreciation for everything she created.

I especially love including questions like this because reading comprehension does not always have to be about finding one correct answer. Giving children the chance to form and explain their own ideas builds confidence and encourages a genuine interest in reading.

Of course, we couldn’t make a Dolly Parton printable pack without including Dollywood!
This page introduces children to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, close to the Great Smoky Mountains where Dolly grew up.
The passage explains that Dollywood is more than just a theme park. While visitors can enjoy roller coasters and other rides, there are also live shows, music, crafts, and opportunities to discover more about Appalachian traditions and mountain culture.
I think this is such an interesting part of Dolly’s story for children to explore because it connects geography, history, music, and culture.
After reading, kids answer questions about where Dollywood is located, what visitors can do there, and why families enjoy visiting the park.
There is also a vocabulary section focusing on words such as “traditions” and “culture.”
The final Think More prompt asks children what they would most like to do if they could spend a day at Dollywood and why.
This could easily lead into a bigger school or homeschool project too. You could find Tennessee on a map, learn about the Great Smoky Mountains, explore Appalachian history, listen to traditional music, or even add a little science by learning about the mountain environment and wildlife.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Reading Comprehension
One of my favorite pages in this resource is dedicated entirely to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
If there is one part of Dolly’s legacy that every parent should know about, this has to be high on the list.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library began in 1995 in Dolly’s home county in Tennessee. The idea was beautifully simple: help children develop a love of books by making sure they have books of their own at home.
The program sends age-appropriate books to registered children from birth until their fifth birthday.
Our reading worksheet explains the idea behind the Imagination Library in language that kids can understand and talks about Dolly’s belief that books can spark imagination, open doors, and help children dream big.

Dolly grew up with very little money in a large family in rural Tennessee, but she had enormous imagination and ambition. She believed in her abilities, worked incredibly hard, and never seemed embarrassed about where she came from.
In fact, she celebrated it.
Her songs and Dolly Parton books often returned to stories about childhood, family, hardship, love, and the Smoky Mountains.
Then, when she became successful, she found ways to support other people.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is such a wonderful example to show children because it demonstrates that success isn’t only about what you achieve for yourself. It can also be about what you do for someone else.
That’s a lesson I think our kids can carry with them throughout life.
