There’s just something magical about the idea of a pot o’ gold sitting at the end of the rainbow, especially when you add in sneaky leprechaun stories and shiny gold coins. It always gets kids excited for the holiday and makes crafting feel extra special.

This easy pot of gold craft uses a paper plate and a few basic supplies, so it’s perfect for a relaxed afternoon of fun crafts at home, in the classroom, or even for special education settings where simple steps really help little hands succeed.
We love crafts like this because they are low prep, colorful, and a great fine motor skill practice activity without feeling like “work.” Plus, anything themed around pots of gold and a sneaky leprechaun is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. Around St Patrick’s day is a great time to celebrate our Irish roots.
You can even turn this into a mini creative writing activity by asking kids to imagine what they would do if they found a pot of gold at the bottom of the rainbow. It’s a fun activity that blends crafting, storytelling, and imagination all in one.

How to Make a Paper Plate Pot of Gold Craft
This st. patrick’s day craft is super simple and beginner friendly, which makes it a great way to get younger kids involved in printable activities and hands-on making.
Start by cutting the paper plate in half like this

Then paint your paper plate black, this is the base for your pot of gold. We used acrylic paint here, but you can use washable kids paint if you prefer
Letting kids paint their own plate is always a hit and adds to the sensory fun of the project.

Then you’re going to download the template from the end of this blog post, and print everything out. Trace the pieces to the color of construction paper you need for each part of the craft.
Once traced, carefully cut out all the pieces. This step is excellent for building fine motor skills and helping with color recognition as kids match each piece.

Once the plate is dry, attach the yellow template piece to the top of the pot of gold.

This represents all those shiny gold coins overflowing from the st. patrick’s day pot, just like in the legends about leprechauns hiding treasure at the end of the rainbow.

After that, glue on the remaining details to complete your rainbow pot of gold craft.

You can talk about the back of the pot, the right side, and where the gold coins sit as you assemble it, which makes the craft feel more interactive for older kids too. If you want to get extra creative, you could even add a rainbow shape with pipe cleaners or construction paper to show the bottom of the rainbow leading right to the pot.
This fun craft project is such a perfect addition to your list of great st. patrick’s day crafts, especially because it’s easy to adapt. Add chocolate coins for party favors, use dot markers for extra decoration, or for homeschool time, combine it with a writing prompt about a sneaky leprechaun guarding the pots of gold.
