I LOVE having a wreath on my front door all seasons of the year. Since you all know by the content on my site that I’m obsessed with holidays, I tend to have some sort of holiday themed wreath up at all times.
Making a deco mesh wreath can be done several ways, and I’m in love with how this adorable DIY American Flag Mesh Wreath came out! It’s not at all difficult and turns out perfect every time.
Follow the simple directions below to make this fun patriotic wreath for your front door!
How do you make this DIY American Flag Mesh Wreath?
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
You will need:
- Wire Wreath Frame (I used a 12″ frame)
- Red or Red and White Striped (I used the striped) 10″ Deco Mesh Roll
- Blue 10″ Deco Mesh Roll
- White Embroidered Stars
- Pipe Cleaners (I used 14 of them)
- Cutting Mat
- Rotary Cutter
- Hot Glue Gun
Step 2: Attach the pipe cleaners to the wreath frame.
You can buy wreath frames with the pipe cleaners already attached, but I like the control of making my own.
It only takes a couple of minutes to twist the pipe cleaners on and this gives you more length to work with as well.
As you can see from the image above, I did half of my pipe cleaners on the outside, and half of them closer to the inside.
Pro Tip: I used red and white pipe cleaners to blend in to the colors of the mesh better. This is always best practice when making a mesh wreath.
Step 3: Cut and attach your blue strips of deco mesh.
I always use the 10″ width deco mesh rolls, but you can use the 6″ or 8″ if you like that width better.
I cut about 12-16 sections of the blue mesh.
When you’re done cutting, roll each section and pinch it like shown above before attaching it.
One at a time, roll and pinch each section and attach them to the wreath by twisting the pipe cleaner around the center of it tightly.
For this American Flag Wreath you will need to only put the blue in a small section. I used about 1/4th of the wreath size for the blue, or four pipe cleaners.
Start by putting one roll on like shown above. It looks weird, but trust the process!
Continue to roll, pinch, and attach on top of the other rolls until it looks good and full.
I stacked 3-4 rolls on top of each other on each pipe cleaner to get the look above.
Pro Tip: To make your wreath look more full and puffy, when you attach the rolls on top of each other on the pipe cleaners, alternate the direction the rolls face so they cover more empty space.
Step 4: Cut and attach your red and white striped deco mesh.
Next, you will need to cut the red and white striped deco mesh for your wreath. You could also use just plain red, or a mixture of red and white mesh, but I loved the way this red and white striped mesh looked.
You will need to fill in the est of the empty pipe cleaners with the red and white mesh rolls. So cut them to 10″ lengths like you did the blue.
I cut and used about 30-35 sections of the red and white deco mesh and attached it to the wreath the same way I did the blue.
Step 5: Trim the pipe cleaners.
Use an old pair of scissors or a pair of wire cutters and trim the length of the pipe cleaners down so you can’t see them sticking up through the mesh.
Step 6: Glue on the stars for your American Flag Wreath.
To put the finishing touch onto your DIY American Flag Deco Mesh Wreath, attach some white stars to the blue section.
I found these embroidered white stars on Amazon and they worked perfectly.
Use a hot glue gun and attach 10-12 of the stars to the blue mesh section only.
When your wreath is finished it will look like this! Deco mesh works great outdoors and indoors, so this is great for inside, or on your front door!
Save tons of money by making one of your own instead of buying it!
