Easy Chocolate Donuts for Valentine’s Day
These Valentine’s Donuts would also make a cute breakfast for your kids on Valentine’s Day. Since they’re so simple, it won’t take a lot of effort, but they’ll love the special treat.
This recipe just bakes these donuts in a donut pan (if you don’t have one you need to get THIS donut pan is THE best!)

Ingredients
Here is a quick overview of each ingredient with possible substitutions. The full printable recipe with measurements can be found at the end of this post!
- Flour – Any all-purpose flour will work best here!
- Brown Sugar – I love the caramel flavor that the brown sugar gives to these donuts. However, you can also use white sugar instead.
- Salt – Enhances the overall flavor and balances the sweetness.
- Cocoa Powder – We like to use cacao, or a light cocoa powder, but a dark cocoa powder would be amazing too!
- Baking Powder – Helps the donuts rise and become light and fluffy.
- Egg – A whole egg is called for in this recipe, but you can use just the yolks, or even 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt to replace the egg (if increasing the batch, increase the yogurt as well)!
- Vanilla – Enhances the flavor of the donuts with a warm, sweet aroma. Don’t skip!
- Butter – You can use salted or unsalted. We usually just keep salted butter on hand, but unsalted is fine too!
- Whole Milk – Provides moisture and helps create a smooth batter. We use whole milk, but you can use whatever kind you’d like!
- Chocolate Cake Frosting – Used as the topping for the donuts, adding a sweet and creamy finish. While this recipe calls for store-bought icing, if you’re feeling up to it, you can make your own chocolate icing instead!
- Sprinkles – While this is optional, I love the pop of color and fun they give to the finished donuts! These Valentine’s Day sprinkles have a lot of different shapes and colors included in one mix!

Instructions
You’re going to love how easy these donuts are to make! We have to stop ourselves from having these too often because they are SO fast to whip up!
- Preheat – Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix – Combine all ingredients in a large bowl, mixing until fully combined and no lumps remain.
- Prep – Spray your donut pan with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
- Fill – Use a spoon to fill each donut cavity in the pan about 2/3 full. The donuts will rise significantly during baking, so don’t overfill.
- Bake – Bake the donuts for 10-12 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into a donut; it should come out clean.
- Cool – Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a cooling rack for 5-7 minutes. Allow the donuts to cool slightly before gently removing them from the pan. Transfer the donuts to the cooling rack to cool completely.
- Prepare Icing – Place your icing in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir to thin the consistency.
- Decorate – Lay out a sheet of wax paper on your counter. Once the donuts are completely cool, dip the tops into the warm icing and set them on the wax paper to dry. Immediately sprinkle Valentine’s Day-themed sprinkles onto the icing before it sets.
- Dry – Let the donuts dry for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the icing to set properly.
