Ingredients

  • 7-8 tart apples Granny Smith work best
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1.5 tablespoons cinnamon separated
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup water
  • dash salt

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F
  • Wash, peel, and slice your apples. If you use the Pampered Chef apple Peeler, Corer, Slicer, it will cut the work in half.
  • Butter your 9x7 pan and then place your apples inside.
  • Sprinkle your pinch of salt over the apples and then coat your apples with the tablespoon of cinnamon. Just enough to make them look more brown than white.
  • Now take your water and sprinkle it over the top of the apples so the cinnamon and salt get worked down into the apples.
  • In a large bowl, mix together your sugar, flour, 1/3 cup butter, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Using your hands, crumble and sprinkle the mixture evenly over the top of your apples.
  • Mixture may be gooier than crumbly, that just means you added a bit too much butter. It will still work fine though so no need to fret. Just crumble it as best you can over the top.
  • Bake at 350°F degrees for about 40-50 minutes or until the top is brown and crispy.
  • Best served hot, with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

There are lots of little modifications you can make to customize this recipe for your needs. Take a quick look at this ingredients list before you get started! The full measurements are available in the printable recipe at the end of the post.
  • Apples – Tart apples are ideal for their tartness and ability to hold shape during baking. Some common tart apple varieties are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. Any apples will work, but tart apples will not get as mushy as other varieties!
  • Sugar – White sugar is typically used in the topping mixture to sweeten and caramelize during baking. Brown sugar can be used for a richer, more molasses-like flavor. We’ve even used maple syrup many times and it’s delicious!
  • Flour – For the perfect crumbly topping, flour is a must that helps to bind the ingredients together. For a gluten-free option, almond flour or a gluten-free flour blend can be used.
  • Cinnamon – Adds warmth and spice to both the apple filling and the topping. Pumpkin pie spice or nutmeg can be added for a different flavor profile.
  • Butter or Margarine – We use salted butter to add richness and help create the crisp, golden topping. Coconut oil or vegan butter can be used for a dairy-free option.
  • Pinch of Salt – A flavor enhancer, salt brings out the flavors of the apples and balances the sweetness. Sea salt or kosher salt can be used depending on preference.
