If you’re looking for easy 4th of July crafts that are fun, affordable, and actually turn out cute, this paper plate American flag craft is such a good one to try. It’s simple enough for toddlers and preschoolers with a little help, but older kids will enjoy it too.
The torn paper gives the stripes a fun textured look, and the finished american flag craft looks adorable hanging on the wall for Memorial Day, Flag Day, the Fourth of July, or any patriotic celebrations throughout the summer.

I love patriotic crafts like this because you only need a few basic supplies, and chances are you already have most of them at home. All you need is a paper plate, some construction paper, glue, scissors, and a marker to create this easy flag craft. It’s one of those low-prep activities that keeps kids busy while still feeling creative and meaningful.
This american flag is also a great way to talk with kids about the meaning of the stars and stripes while they craft. Younger kids can practice tearing paper, gluing, and placing pieces, while older kids can focus on patterns and design. It’s simple, relaxing, and makes a really sweet patriotic decoration for summer.
Materials You’ll Need for your Preschool American Flag Craft
For this american flag craft, you’ll need a paper plate, red and blue construction paper, scissors, a glue stick, and a white marker. That’s it. No complicated supplies and you don’t need to measure out perfectly.

This is one of those crafts where imperfect actually makes it look even better. The torn paper stripes give the flag a handmade feel that’s really charming.
Even though a lot of patriotic crafts use a free printable or template, this one does not need any printable pieces at all. Kids can create the whole flag themselves using simple shapes and torn paper, which makes it extra fun and hands-on.
I’ve listed the supplies below on Amazon
How to Make This Paper Plate American Flag
Start by tearing strips of red construction paper into long pieces for the stripes. They do not need to be perfectly straight. In fact, the slightly uneven edges make the finished craft look even cuter.

Glue the red strips horizontally across the paper plate, leaving white spaces in between for the white stripes of the american flag. Once the plate is covered, trim away any excess paper hanging over the edges.

Next, cut a blue rectangle shape from blue construction paper. Instead of a sharp rectangle, we used a curved quarter-circle shape to fit nicely onto the paper plate.

Using a white marker, draw little stars all over the blue section. This part is really fun for kids because the stars do not have to be perfect either.

Finally, glue the blue section with the stars onto the upper corner of the paper plate to complete your flag craft. That’s it. A super easy patriotic craft that comes together quickly and looks so bright and cheerful for 4th of July activities.

Why Ripped Paper Crafts?
There’s just something fun about tearing paper and gluing it into place. This craft keeps little hands busy without being frustrating, which makes it perfect for toddlers and younger kids.

It’s a nice quiet activity for summer afternoons or holiday parties, and it’s also great for building up fine motor skills and hand strength in those little hands as they rip the paper.
The bright red, white, and blue colors make this american flag really eye-catching, and kids love seeing the finished project come together piece by piece. Because the craft is so simple, children can feel proud creating most of it independently.

Perfect for Patriotic Holidays
This flag craft works so well for Memorial Day, Flag Day, Veterans Day, or Fourth of July celebrations. You can hang the finished crafts on windows, bulletin boards, refrigerators, or even use them as part of patriotic party decorations.
If you’re putting together a summer craft week, this also pairs nicely with other patriotic crafts and simple paper activities for kids. It’s inexpensive, low mess, and easy to adapt for different ages.
