If you’ve ever looked at store-bought laundry detergent pods and wondered what’s actually inside them, you’re not alone. Making your own natural laundry pods is such a satisfying swap. They’re simple, budget-friendly, and made with ingredients you can feel good about using around your home and family. Plus, once you try them, it’s hard to go back to regular laundry detergents.

These natural laundry pods are a great option if you’re trying to cut down on harsh chemicals, reduce plastic waste, or just want a more friendly laundry routine. They work beautifully for everyday loads and are especially nice if you have sensitive skin in your household.
Why Make Your Own Natural Laundry Pods?
One of the biggest benefits of DIY natural laundry detergent is knowing exactly what’s going into your laundry. Many conventional detergent pods contain synthetic fragrances and additives that can irritate skin or linger on clothes. With these natural laundry pods, you’re using simple, effective, plant-based ingredients.
They’re also surprisingly affordable. A single batch makes quite a few pods, and the ingredients go a long way. Compared to buying laundry detergent pods from the store, this is a really cost-effective option.
Another big win is cutting down on plastic. Most store-bought laundry pods come in bulky plastic containers, while these can be stored in a simple glass jar or reusable container.

Natural Laundry Pods Ingredients Breakdown
Each ingredient in this natural laundry detergent recipe has a purpose, and together they create a powerful but gentle cleaning combo.

Baking soda helps to freshen and deodorize your laundry, keeping clothes smelling clean without synthetic scents.
Washing soda is a stronger cleaning agent that boosts the effectiveness of your laundry detergent. It helps tackle dirt and grime, making it great for everyday cleaning and even some tougher stains.
Salt helps to soften water and enhance the cleaning power of the other ingredients.
Castile soap is a gentle, plant-based soap that adds cleansing power while still being kind to fabrics and skin. Grating it allows it to mix evenly throughout the pods.
Distilled vinegar helps bind everything together while also acting as a natural fabric softener.
Essential oils are completely optional, but they’re a lovely way to add a light, natural scent. Lavender and eucalyptus are both great choices if you want a fresh, clean smell without anything overpowering.

Measuring cups

How to Make Natural Laundry Pods
Start by adding ¼ cup of salt to your mixing bowl.

Then mix in ½ cup of washing soda.

If you’re using essential oils, add around 20 drops at this stage. This is where you can customize your natural laundry pods to smell exactly how you like.

Next, grate a full bar of castile soap and add it into the mixture. This step takes a little effort, but it’s worth it for a smooth, even blend.

Slowly add distilled vinegar, about ¼ cup at a time, mixing as you go.

The mixture will start to come together into a thick, toothpaste-like consistency. You’ll likely need about ½ cup total.

Once everything is well combined, firmly press the mixture into your molds. Pack it down tightly so the pods hold their shape.

Let the pods dry for at least 24 hours. Placing them in a sunny spot can help speed things up.
When they’re fully dry, pop them out of the molds and store them in an airtight container.

How to Use Your Laundry Pods
Using these natural laundry pods couldn’t be easier. Just add one pod directly into the drum with your clothes before starting your wash cycle.
They dissolve during the wash and leave your laundry clean, fresh, and free from any heavy residues. For larger or heavily soiled loads, you can use two pods if needed.

Do Natural Laundry Pods Actually Work?
Yes, they really do. While they don’t have the strong artificial scent of some commercial laundry detergents, they clean effectively and leave clothes feeling fresh.
They’re especially good for regular, everyday laundry and work well for families trying to switch to a more natural routine. For tough stains, you may want to pre-treat first, but for general cleaning, these pods hold their own.

A Simple Swap That Makes a Difference
Switching to natural laundry pods is one of those small changes that can have a big impact. You’re reducing exposure to unnecessary chemicals, cutting down on plastic, and saving money all at once.
And honestly, there’s something really satisfying about opening your laundry jar and knowing you made those pods yourself.
