Every year when we go to the beach, we get tons of shells. I’m always looking for ways to turn them into something new, and I’m IN LOVE with how this Santa seashell ornament DIY turned out!
The great thing about this little DIY ornament is that it’s quick. AND you don’t need to be a good painter for it to turn out super cute every time!
If you’re wanting to bring more of the beach to your holiday decor this year, you should also make this gorgeous Sea Glass Christmas tree decor! I used store-bought sea glass and am blown away by how pretty it turned out!
How do you make this Santa seashell ornament DIY?
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
You will need:
- Acrylic Paint (I used peach, red, and black)
- White Seashells
- Small White Pom-Poms
- Small Paintbrushes
- Twine or Ribbon (for hanging)
- Hot Glue Gun
Step 2: Paint on the red hat portion.
Painting on your Santa hat is so easy! The shape will need to look like above.
I just used red acrylic paint and painted straight across the top of the shell, and then painted a tapered section down along the side to look like Santa’s hat.
Let it dry, then move on to the next step.
Step 3: Paint on the face section.
Use the peach acrylic paint to make a small rectangle in the middle of the exposed white section of the shell.
It doesn’t need to be perfect, just make a cute little peach rectangle.
Let it dry, and then move on to the next step.
Step 4: Add on the face and the pom-pom.
After the face section was dry, I wanted to give the Santa eyes, nose, and a mouth.
I used a small paintbrush and gave him little black eyes, a pink nose (i just mixed a little red into my peach paint), and a red smile below the rectangle.
I used a hot glue gun to glue on the white pom-pom onto the end of the red tapered section to finish off his Santa hat.
Step 5: Add the ornament hanger.
I used a piece of twine and hot glued it to the back of the shell in a loop so I could hang it on my tree. This worked great!
You could also use ribbon or fishing line if you wanted a different look.
Try mixing up the sizes of shells to change how it looks too! Keep in mind that bigger shells will be heavier and some branches won’t be able to handle the weight of them.

I saw this on Pinterest and thought it was so cute! So I grabbed my shells that I have tons of from the beach and have made a few of them for friends this Christmas as gifts. My question is since we’re using acrylic paint should we be using some kind of spray or something to keep the paint from damage? Thank you!

I’ve never had any issue with mine. Although, I keep all my ornaments stored in tubs and small ones like these are wrapped in tissue paper first. It wouldn’t hurt if you want to be careful!
