If you like the flavors of fall, then you're going to LOVE this Pecan Pie French Toast! Packed with cinnamon, pecans, crisp bread, and ooey-gooey caramel filling, this is the best and most indulgent fall breakfast recipe.
In a sauce pan on medium-high heat, combine all the ingredients for the Pecan Pie mixture. Add the eggs last to keep them from scrambling. Use a whisk to mix all the ingredients together, and to break up the eggs.
Turn the heat down to low, and continue to let the mixture cook, stirring occasionally, until all the French Toast is done.
In a large bowl, combine the milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and maple syrup. Use a whisk to beat the mixture until the eggs are fully scrambled.
Put a skillet on the stove set at medium heat. Melt some butter and let it bubble before adding the bread.
Take a single piece of bread and quickly dunk both sides of it into the milk and egg mixture. Then immediately put it into the hot pan. Do this until the pan is full but not crowded.
Let each side cook for 30-60 seconds or until golden brown. Repeat until the mixture is gone or until you’ve made enough for your family.
To serve, stack the finished French Toast as desired and top each stack with a generous ladle of the pecan pie mixture.
Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve!
Notes
Make sure the heat isn't too high when you add the bread to the pan. Your bread will burn causing the french toast to be undercooked and burnt at the same time.
Be generous with the pecan pie topping - it's the best part!
Keep your french toast in a covered foil pan while you're making it to keep it hot and fresh.
Ingredients
While this recipe might seem like it has a lot of ingredients, you probably have most of them on hand already! Here is a look at each ingredient, as well as any possible substitutions.
Bread – Using day-old bread is perfect for French Toast as it really allows the liquid to be soaked into the bread. Fresh bread is fine too. Use whatever thickness you prefer.
Eggs – Whole eggs are used in this recipe, and are the base for any French Toast batter as well as used as a thickener in the pecan pie topping.
Milk – You can use any type of milk you’d like here! We have used oat milk, almond milk, and more. But my preference is whole cow’s milk.
Maple Syrup – Used in both the pecan pie topping and the French Toast batter, maple syrup gives a rich flavor to the dish. However, corn syrup can also be used if desired.
Vanilla and Cinnamon – Cinnamon is a classic flavor in French Toast and vanilla will enhance the overall dish. If needed, nutmeg can be used in place of cinnamon.
Sugar – Both white and brown sugar are used in this recipe to create the caramel base for the pecan pie filling.
Butter – I use salted butter in all my cooking and baking. However, you can use unsalted or even vegan butter if needed.
Pecans – While pecans are a given in this recipe, you can substitute them for walnuts or almonds if desired.
