Easy Homemade Playdough
My son has always loved playdough! We used to buy a big pack every Christmas that he used with his various playdough extruder sets. His favorite is this playdough candy machine!
He’s also a huge fan of Mr Roger’s Neighborhood, so when Mr Rogers himself shared his favorite recipe for soft homemade playdough, we had to try it! This recipe can be made in larger batches by just increasing the “part” size mentioned in the recipe. While I use a 1/2 cup “part” you can double or triple it (or more) to make more playdough at once!
Here’s what I love about this playdough recipe:
- Easy to make
- Simple ingredients
- Doesn’t stick to your hands
- No weird “play-dough smell”
- Lovely smooth texture
- Easy to tint with food coloring
- Completely food-safe, so it’s great for toddlers!
Top 5 Tips for Making and Enjoying Homemade Playdough
Following these tips will help you make the softest, longest-lasting, and most fun homemade playdough for endless creative play!
- Use Fine Salt – Fine salt dissolves better in the dough, creating a smoother texture. Coarse salt may result in a grainy feel.
- Add Color Before Mixing – If you’re using food coloring, mix it into the water first. This ensures even distribution and prevents streaky or patchy color.
- Store It Properly – Keep the playdough in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag when not in use. If it starts to dry out, knead in a few drops of water to bring it back to life.
- Experiment with Scents – Enhance sensory play by adding a few drops of essential oils like lavender for relaxation or peppermint for an energizing experience. During the fall, I like to mix in some pumpkin spice spice and orange food coloring!
- Get Creative with Play – Use cookie cutters, rolling pins, and stamps to create fun shapes and patterns. You can even add glitter or small beads for extra texture!
Ingredients
One of my favorite things about this recipe is that you probably have everything you need on hand right now! Just grab a few things from the pantry and get to mixing! The full measurements and printable recipe can be found at the end of the post.
- Salt – Helps preserve the playdough and adds texture. Use a fine salt for the best texture as coarse salt will not melt into the dough the same way!
- Flour – Creates the base of the dough, giving it structure. You can use any all-purpose flour, but typically gluten-free flour will not work well.
- Cold Water – Brings everything together and allows you to adjust the dough’s consistency.
- Coloring (optional) – You can just use the white final product of this recipe, but you can also color it in various shades as well! We try to make a few different colors each time using dye-free food coloring. Food coloring is the best way to keep this playdough toddler safe.
- Scents (optional) – If you have a favorite extract of essential oil, feel free to add a few drops to the mix as you add the water. It’s a fun way to create seasonal experiences!

Instructions
So simple, this homemade playdough is on repeat at our house! It’s easy enough that my son can make it on his own!
- Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 part salt with 2 parts flour, stirring to distribute evenly.
- Add Water – Slowly add cold water, a little at a time, stirring continuously.
- Knead – Once the dough starts coming together, transfer it to a clean surface and knead it until smooth. If it’s too dry, add a few drops of water; if it’s too sticky, add a little more flour.
- Customize – For added fun, mix in food coloring or a few drops of essential oil to create colorful and scented playdough.
- Store – Keep the playdough in an airtight container or sealed bag to prevent it from drying out. In the fridge it will last for many months, or at room temperature it will last for about 2-3 months in a bag or container.
